Fly Fishing Photos

Something a bit different in late June 2009, when eight Boulder Flycasters rafted down the Gunnison River on a trip outfitted by Dvorak Expeditions. The fishing wasn't quite up to our expectations as the river flows were quite high due to the recent rains and still melting snow. We still managed to catch some healthy fish and have a great time. Take a look at some photos of the three day trip.

Once again, our annual trip to the Green River. John, Jerry and I went the middle of April, 2008. Despite the windy, sunny and cold conditions, the dry fly fishing was actually pretty good - better than last year. We were a week earlier than usual and the crowds seemed to be less than normal. Note the boat ramp in one of the pictures.

Made it out to the Green River again in late April 2007 with John, Tom & Roy. Flows are down again to 800 cfs due to the low snowpack. Good nymph fishing all week, but the dry fly fishing was only average due to the good weather (meaning sunny skies) we had most days. But the winds were fairly light all week!

Thinking we'd try out some bass fishing down in Texas, John Metrick and I drove 2000 miles there and back in late March 2007. Spent a week on Lake Fork Reservoir trying to catch some largemouth (have to admit it was with spinning gear, not fly rods). We did catch some, but generally the fishing was a disappointment. I've caught bigger bass up in Canada. Except for the wind, at least the weather was pretty nice and we didn't get bitten by any bugs all week.

In August I went on a five day horse pack trip to the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming with eight other flyfisherman, mostly from Boulder. We rode horses about 12 miles to an outfitter's camp on the edge of the Clout Peak Winderness area. No shortage of brook trout and lots of cutthroat, too.

Our annual spring trip to the Green River (late April 2006) didn't produce quite the dry fly action we normally experience. The weather was just too nice! Lots of sun, mild temperatures and some gusty winds just about when the hatch was supposed to come off kept the fish down a bit. So, we usually nymphed all morning and spent more time than usual scouting for rising fish in the afternoon. Great time as always, with lots of healthy browns and rainbows brought to the net (we let them all go).

Tom Flanagan, John Metrick and I returned to upstate New York in November 2005 for some steelhead and brown trout fishing on some of the rivers flowing into Lakes Erie and Ontario. The weather was quite warm compared to our last time there, two years ago. Water levels were on the low-side, so the conditions weren't ideal, but we still had a great time and even caught some good-size fish. Bonus: some fish videos!

Hiked up to Mills Lake in Rocky Mountain Park. Wanted to do some fishing, but the wind was just HOWLING all day. Despite the challenging conditions, my friend, John and I still managed to catch a few rainbows (September 2005).

A day of Colorado bonefishing (carp) near Longmont in July 2005.

We floated and wade fished the Green River in April 2005. Page 1 are mostly my photos and Page 2 are photos by Tom Flanagan.
