Cross Country Skiing Pictures

• The annual hut trip this year was to the newest cabin in the 10th Mountain Division hut system, the Continental Divide Cabin. Eight of us spent a night there in mid-February 2008. We managed to turn the one mile ski-in into a 2 1/2 mile trip, but we eventually found the hut. Quite a change from the trek into Skinner. Not too many pictures, but here they are anyway.

• In late January 2007, about ten of us skied up to Vance's Cabin, a short 3 mile trek starting from the base of Ski Cooper. Much easier than last year! Cool temperatures, sunny skies, no wind, but no new snow either. Enjoy the pictures! I added some of John's to my collection.

• Ralie came to town on business and stayed an extra day. So, he, John and I headed back up to RMNP and tried to recreate our trip to Lake Helene from some 35 years ago. The weather didn't cooperate, however. It was one of the nastiest days I've ever had in the mountains in winter: high winds (I'm sure it was gusting over 50 mph) and cold temps made for a challenging day. So we stayed in the trees and didn't quite make it up to the lake. But we enjoyed decent snow and had a fun run back down the trail. So here are a few photos along with shots of some coyotes we ran into on the drive out.

• John, Katrina and I skied up to Lake Helene in Rocky Mountain Park on a crisp, cool day in February and a rare day when the wind wasn't blowing! It was about 7 1/2 miles roundtrip, starting out at Bear Lake. Here are a few pictures and if you're interested, take a look at our route mapped out by the GPS.

• In late January 2006, six of us skied to Skinner Hut, one of the 10th Mountain Division huts, located just below Hagerman Pass at 11,600', west of Leadville. It's a long, grueling and at times monotonous, 11 mile trek to the cabin. No shortage of snow here and we were lucky enough to enjoy the cabin to ourselves on the second night.

• A few pictures from a day trip to Loch Vale in Rocky Mountain Park (January 2006). A warm, windy day with lousy snow.

• Here's an assortment of pictures from various cross-country day ski trips to places a short drive from Boulder: Forest Lakes and Haystack Mountain above the Moffat Tunnel and Apex, a bit to the south of there.
